Press the start button, engage the accelerator and off you go. The Hybrid Synergy Drive technology is so sophisticated it automatically reads your use of the throttle to decide whether to drive on electric, petrol or both – seamlessly flowing between sources. All you do is drive normally and relax.
Hybrid Synergy Drive Advanced Electric Motors The petrol engine and two electric motors are all separate, which allows Prius to consistently deliver maximum performance and energy efficiency at every stage of your drive.

Unlike anything on the road today, the main electric motor can power the car on electricity alone. With a 60 kW output, it can produce a maximum speed of 45km/h for up to 2km (EV Mode), providing further economies in fuel and CO2 emissions. Uniquely, the second electric motor can independently recharge the battery at any time.

The Stop & Start feature lowers fuel consumption even further by using solely the electric motor to start the car, ensuring a faster and smoother restart.
High energy battery Developed with proven and reliable NiMH technology, the new compact battery delivers higher energy output (27 kW) and a larger capacity than any other hybrid system. Energy recovery is maximised by a high performance integrated cooling system. Amazing stamina too – it lasts the entire lifetime of the vehicle. The battery automatically recharges itself when you brake.

Understand Toyota's full hybrid technology Safety VSC+ & TRC <strong>A safer, more stable ride</strong><br /><br />
Standard on the Prius is Vehicle Stability Control Plus (VSC+). During sudden handling changes or on slippery roads it adds a steering torque assist to counteract over- or under-steering. In an extreme situation, the driver may sense some compensating torque movement on the steering wheel, and so can further enhance the adjustment made by the VSC+.
<br /><br />
If a driver accelerates too hard and causes the drive wheels to lose grip and begin spinning, Traction Control (TRC) instantly reduces engine power to help restore traction.
Pre-Crash Safety System Sensors located under the front grille predict possible collisions with other vehicles or obstacles ahead, triggering a series of intelligent safety features. The brake assist activates an audible alarm sounds, the seatbelt automatically tenses and the automatic brake engages. This lessens the potential impact and damage if a collision occurs.

SRS airbags <strong>Seven airbags for safety</strong><br /><br />
The Prius is fitted with seven Supplement Restraint System (SRS) airbags. The twin chamber inflatable SRS airbags for driver and front seat passenger have proximity and rate-of-impact sensors that ensure proper deployment to help prevent injuries. There are also SRS side airbags for the front seat passenger, a driver's knee airbag and SRS curtain shield airbags covering both the front and rear seat passengers.
ABS, EBD & BA <strong>Secure braking</strong><br /><br />
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) balances the braking force between all four wheels to match the level grip of each. Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) complements this by optimising brake force allocation between each wheel. Together the two systems keep wheels from locking, and allow you to steer around obstacles as you halt.

Brake Assist (BA) is able to detect emergency braking and, in cases where not enough pressure has been applied to the brake pedal, will add additional braking power.
Emergency brake signal <strong>Emergency Brake Signal (EBS)</strong><br /><br />
Standard in the Prius, the rear stop lights flash in an emergency braking situation alerting following traffic. Research shows that this warning mechanism can help reduce rear-end collisions by cutting reaction times by up to 50%.
Active front headrests <strong>Whiplash injury reduction</strong><br /><br />
Prior to impact, the pre-crash, intelligent, active front headrests shift to appropriate positions to reduce whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.

The body structure of the Prius is built with full impact absorbing attributes, providing you and your passengers with additional protection.
NCAP 5-stars safety rating <p>Prius has been awarded a maximum NCAP 5-star safety rating - achieving a remarkable 83% for overall protection performance in the new stringent assessment scheme. Proof that Toyota’s comprehensive levels of active and passive safety provide superior driving protection. Prius comes with an impact absorbing body shell, seven airbags and active headrests. The Electronically-Controlled Braking system (EBS) incorporates Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control+ (VSC+). A new Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS) with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is also available.
