Correcting Oversteer Oversteering can cause the rear of a vehicle to swing out. To prevent this, the RAV4’s Integrated Active Drive System distributes more drive force to the front wheels, provides steering torque assistance to keep the vehicle stable and improves acceleration.
Correcting Understeer Understeering can cause the front of the vehicle to drift away. To counter this, the RAV4’s Integrated Active Drive System supplies more torque to the rear wheels, provides steering torque assistance to keep you on track and enhances acceleration.
Traction control The RAV4’s Traction Control (TRC) uses braking and reduced torque in situations where the wheels lose grip on the road or start spinning. It restores traction by redistributing the amount of power to each wheel independently.
Engines 2.2 litre D-4D 150 With the 2.2 litre D-4D 150 engine, CO² emissions levels significantly undercut the competition at just 154 g/km* - making it the first 4WD vehicle to deliver less than 160 g/km. Every aspect of this remarkable engine's operation is precisely controlled, and represents the best in diesel engineering. The overall benefits of this improved engine are twofold. This trailblazing technology reduces Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and particulate emissions at the same time. Thanks to the new, intelligent 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifts(^) it's a capable and quiet performer with low fuel consumption (7.2 litres/100 km*). 2.2 litre D-CAT 180 Pure performance with the 2.2 litre D-CAT 180 engine, 6-speed manual transmission. This massively powerful engine generates a potent 130 kW (177 DIN hp)/3600 rpm of power and 400 Nm of torque at just 2000–2800 rpm. Thanks to Toyota Optimal Drive, incorporating Diesel Clean Advanced Technology (D-CAT), CO² levels are as low as 177 g/km* - making it the cleanest and most powerful engine in its class. This trailblazing D-CAT technology reduces Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and particulate emissions at the same time. Furthermore this engine has an impressive acceleration of 0–100 km in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h**. Fuel consumption is just 6.7 litres/100 km*.

2.0 litre Valvematic This brand new 2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engine offers a robust 116 kW (158 DIN hp)/6200 rpm, rapid and smooth acceleration (with 0–100 km in 10.5 seconds) and exemplary fuel economy (7.6 litres/100 km*). Amongst many advances is a new variable valve lift mechanism called Valvematic technology that works alongside Dual VVT-i technology to control the lift and timing of the intake valves. Overall results are impressive: more efficient combustion and reduced CO² emissions (178 g/km*). Also torque is increased (198 Nm/ 4400 rpm) and power output is boosted. The 6-speed manual transmission gives a responsive, enjoyable performance and a top speed of 185 km/h**.

Brand-new is the Multidrive S transmission. This uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with adjustable pulleys, rather than the conventional cogs. The result is smooth acceleration (0–100 km in 11 seconds**) and optimal fuel economy (7.5 litres/100 km*). One final petrol alternative is a 2WD version of this petrol engine with 6-speed manual transmission, for even greater fuel economy.

Safety Euro NCAP <p>The superbly designed and engineered RAV4 scores impressively in safety ratings. From a maximum five-stars, it received a four-star Euro NCAP rating, both for adult occupant protection and child safety, as well as three stars for pedestrian protection.</p>
IADS RAV4's Integrated Active Drive System links VSC with Electric Power Steering (EPS) and 4WD and also uses the benefits of all three systems for high safety performance. It actively monitors road conditions, reacting quickly to potential problems and making necessary corrections well in time.
7 Airbags In the event of a collision, the RAV4 ensures you and your passengers are protected with seven separate airbags. These include SRS driver and passenger airbags, SRS side airbags, SRS curtain shield airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.
HAC and DAC <p>Hill start Assist Control (HAC) helps prevent the RAV4 rolling back on a steep incline. Similarly, Downhill Assist Control (DAC – available on automatic and Multidrive S transmissions) maintains control on a steep descent by braking and releasing individual wheels.</p>
LED Rear Lights The advantage to LED brake lights is that they respond more quickly when the brake pedal is used. At a speed of around 100 km/h, this gives an extra six metres braking distance to the car behind. That difference can be crucial.
Active Headrest RAV4 is equipped with Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) concept front seats, along with active headrests. Together, these reduce impact on the neck and help to protect you in the event of a collision from the rear.
