Performance Correcting Understeer Sensors detect an imminent slide and power is distributed to the rear wheels. The appropriate wheel receives independent braking, and steering torque assist encourages the driver to counter-steer.

Correcting Oversteer The bulk of the power is transferred to the wheels with optimum road contact and the anti-lock brakes apply independent braking where it's required. Extra steering torque works with traction control to maintain trajectory and aid correct steering.

Engines 2.2 litre D-4D 135
RAV4's 2.2 litre D-4D 135 Diesel Engine combines the thrill of lively acceleration and quick-to-respond power through the application of advanced common rail diesel technology, which is constantly calculating exact fuel pressure, injection timing and volume as you drive. This responsive 136 DIN hp engine offers an impressive 310 Nm of torque between 2000 and 2800 rpm. Combined fuel consumption gets as low as 6.6 litres per 100 km, and an ultra smooth six-speed manual gearbox enables a top speed of 180 km/h and a rapid acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.

2.2 litre D-4D 180 Clean Power
Exclusively fitted on the RAV4-X, Toyota's state-of-the-art 2.2 litre D-4D 180 Clean Power engine is the cleanest and most powerful engine in its class. Using innovative Toyota D-CAT technology, the engine's Diesel Particulate NOx Reduction (DPNR) system enables more efficient filtering of harmful particulates. This results in the lowest combined NOx and particle emissions of any modern diesel and far below the criteria specified by 2005 EURO 4 legislation.

The piezoelectric injectors in the common rail system allow larger amounts of fuel to be injected more quickly offering extremely precise combustion control. The ultra-smooth 6-speed manual transmission, allows the 177 DIN hp engine to generate 400 Nm of torque between 2000 and 2600 rpm, giving an impressive acceleration figure of 0-100 km in only 9.3 seconds and top speed of 200 km/h*. But economy's important too with a combined fuel consumption figure of just 7.0 litres for every 100 km.

2.0 litre VVT-i
This 2.0-litre 152 DIN hp VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence) petrol engine uses advanced computer technology to boost performance by constantly varying the air intake valve timing according to driving conditions, at the same time maximising fuel economy. It creates optimum torque across a wide range of engine revs and enviable fuel economy of 8.6 litres per 100 km with the manual transmission and 9.0 litres per 100 km with the optional four-speed automatic transmission.

Both transmission options were developed using Toyota's most advanced technologies. The five-speed manual transmission delivers an acceleration figure of 0-100 km/h in only 10.6 seconds, with a top speed of 185 km. The optional four-speed automatic allows for ease of driving, with an acceleration figure of 0-100 km in 12 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h.

Safety IADS
The computer-controlled Integrated Active Drive System allows the RAV4 to take every bend, every curve and every slope in its stride, revolutionising driving pleasure and safety. It links the stability and steering elements of the car's systems and uses the benefits of both to enhance performance and safety. If you over- or under-steer when cornering, for example, the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) will be triggered into helping with the braking while the Electric Power Steering (EPS) will make an incorrect steering action more difficult to execute. If you're accelerating round a bend on a slippery road, Traction Control (TRC) and VSC will help to keep the vehicle stable.

9 AIRBAGS To ensure maximum driver and passenger protection, there are no less than 9 airbags inside RAV4's cabin. They include dual stage SRS driver and passenger airbags, SRS side airbags, SRS curtain shield airbags and (a first in this market segment) a driver's knee airbag. There's also a cut-off switch on the passenger side to disable the front passenger airbags so you can safely put a child seat there.
LED Rear Lights LED rear lights are much quicker to light-up when you hit the brake pedal than conventional brake lamp bulbs. At 100 km/h that means approximately another 6 metres braking distance for the vehicle behind.
HAC & DAC (DAC only available with A/T) HAC (Hill-start Assist Control) helps stop RAV4 rolling back on hill starts by applying extra hydraulic pressure to the brakes when you move your foot from brake to accelerator. The brakes will then hold for a maximum of two seconds allowing you to move off safely. Only available with the automatic transmission, DAC (Downhill Assist Control) monitors and regulates your speed on a steep descent by automatically braking and releasing each wheel accordingly, giving you greater control of your descent.
Euro NCAP Nine airbags. Revolutionary Integrated Active Drive System. Supreme road-holding and stability. No wonder the RAV4 has been awarded a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating for occupants. And a three-star safety rating for pedestrian protection underlines the RAV4's commitment to excellent all-round safety provision.
